Academic Details : P. Prabuthas completed his BSc (Microbiology) from University of Madras in the year 1999, he has completed his Masters in Microbiology from Madurai Kamaraj University in year 2001. He did his PhD from IIT Kharagpur and currently he is pursuing his PDF from the IIT Kharagpur. His thrust are of research is extraction and characterization of novel pigments from potential microalgal species for food colouring.

Area of Work : Optimization of Growth Conditions, Biochemicals Extraction and Development of Ready-to-serve Beverage From Spirulina platensis Biomass
The PhD study was aimed to develop a process technology for production of ready-to-serve (RTS) beverage using extract of fresh Spirulina platensis var lonor biomass harvested under optimized growth conditions. Initially, optimization of growth conditions was carried out. The fresh biomass was harvested by centrifugation and further subjected to extraction with two solvent systems namely, hexane: acetone (3:2) and water: ethanol (2:1), for Î²-carotene and phycocyanin, respectively. Various invitro biological assay were performed using the obtained extract which includes, protein digestibility index, antioxidant activity, Î±-amylase, and Î±-glucosidase inhibitory assay and anti-cancer activity. RTS health beverage was prepared by using the extract at suitable proportion of various ingredients which includes freeze dried extract, table salt, sugar, citric acid, sodium benzoate and pineapple flavor. The storage studies was also conducted under various conditions such as refrigerated (5Â±2 oC), ambient (30Â±2 oC) and accelerated (45Â±2 oC) conditions.
